Sleeping Like an Ape

Our bodies undergo daily stresses. We rely on sleeping/rest to help our bodies readjust themselves each day. Think of the amount of advertisements we are bombarded with concerning relaxation and sleep! Whether it is a sleep number bed, a lazy boy recliner or a new hot tub, our society is focused on releaving those aches and pains. According to our assigned reading, animals such as gorillas sleep in different positions that actually help their bodies realign more efficiently to avoid achy joints. The advice is that we learn and gain alot from more "primative" and natural sleeping practices.

Please write your reflections about the article on this blog. I would like to you respond to 2 simple questions:
1. What did you find interesting when you read the article?
2. What questions did you generate while reading?

You are required to reflect AND respond to at least 3 classmates reflections.

  1. The article was interesting because I thought pillows were actually helpful when sleeping but I guess not! Like they came out with those leg and body pillows! and they're actually bad for our alignment!
    I had 3 questions:
    1. What can you actually use to sleep peacefully?
    2. Is sleeping on the floor good?
    3. Do all animals do this or just primates?

  2. I thought it was interesting that the animals can sleep on the ground without back pain, because when i sleep on the ground my back always is really stiff when I wake up.
    Questions I had:
    1. Have they done studies on humans to see if this would affect back pain?
    2. Should we sleep without pillows?

  3. I found the article interesting especially when you see the commercials where sleeping on their beds aligns your spine, and it shows the creepy sci-fi xray vision view of your back.
I am also interested to see what sleeping on the floor does to your back as aditi mentioned...

My other questions would be do all animals have special sleep positions in their nature that is better for them? and how is this better?

  4. I thought it was interesting that pillows actually make things worse for us. I also thought it was cool how apes are so smart that they thought to sleep in positions that "protect" themselves.
    Questions:
    1. Should humans sleep without pillows?
    2. Would it be better to sleep on a memory foam bed, or without a pillow?

  5. p.s. shortnspeedy246 is Mari. =)

  6. i thought it was interesting that sleeping could actually totally effect how your body functions and it has to do with arthritis. i would not have ever thought that. i also did not know that the apes sleeping position allowed for its joints to be more flexible
    Questions:
Do male and female apes have different sleeping positions?
Wouldnt sleeping on our hard ground cement mess with your pelvis and possibly over time bruise it?

  7. Mari's Reflection:
Aditi, that's a good question about all animals have certain sleeping habits that help their bodies.
Ashleigh, I am also really curious on if sleeping without a pillow would be better for our backs.
Abbey, I would think that females would have somewhat different sleeping positions because they would have to protect different parts.

I have another question. Does sleeping with a pillow in between your legs help your back alignment like they say it does?

  8. THIS ARTICLE SHOCKED ME WHILE READING IT BECAUSE I HAVE TO HAVE AT LEAST 2 PILLOWS WHILE SLEEPING AND THEY NEED TO BE FLUFFY:)IT WAS INTERESTING TO FIND OUT THAT PILLOWS ARENT REALLY GOOD FOR YOU AND TO KNOW THAT THEY SLEEP IN A WAY THAT PROTECTS THEIR BODY PARTS.
    QUESTIONS:
    1. SO ALONG WITH SLLEPING WITHOUT A PILLOW...DOES IT MATTER IF YOU SLEEP ON YOUR STOMACH OR YOUR BACK BY ANY MEANS?
    2. IS THERE A CERTAIN WAY THAT FEMALES SHOULD SLEEP TO PROTECT CERTAIN PARTS LIKE FOR MALES?

ASHLEIGH- I TOTALLY KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN...WHEN I SLEEP ON THE GROUND I DONT WANT TO MOVE THE NEXT DAY!!!
MARI- I WAS THINKING THE SAME THING WHEN I THOUGHT OF PILLOWS BECAUSE PEOPLE ALWAYS SAY ITS GOOD FOR YOUR BACK WHEN YOU SLEEP WITH A PILLOW INBEWTEEN YOUR LEGS.
ABBEY- GOOD QUESTION I REALLY WANT TO KNOW NOW IF THERE ARE DIFFERENT POSITIONS FOR FEMALES!

  9. I found it interesting that these sleeping positions seem to be a natural animal instinct, yet we have managed to change overlook our instincts so that we can be more temporarily comfortable.

My question is that if pillows aren't good for us, why haven't physical therapists recommended we don't use them? And why do they make special therepeutic ones for bad backs if you can fix the problem by simply not using a pillow?

  10. I found that it was interesting that the apes are actually sleeping in a health way, and we human didn't even realize we were the ones that were doing that wrong way.

    Questions:
Does this take in to effect if you move in your sleep (because I do)?
Would it effect males differently from females?

    ReplyDelete
  11. Abby nice good question about females because we have stuff too!

Mari I think that the foam is soft but don't mean better because they sleep on the ground!!!

Lauren, I thnk that it all depends on the environment they sleep in.

  12. I thought it was interesting how these primates that we see as inferior to us know how to sleep better than us. But i agree with the apes. I dont usually sleep with a pillow and if i do, it is really flat and pretty much worthless.

    Questions:
What is the best way for humans to sleep?back, side, stomach?
What is the best kind of pillow or bed for us?

    ReplyDelete
  13. Mari: I have had back problems and the chiropractor told me to sleep with a pillow between my legs. So i guess its supposed to do something.

Ashleigh: That is a good question. You think they should have done some kind of research already to find a way to reduce pain.

Abbey: I agree with you about sleeping on the ground. It is so hard you would think that it would be worse than sleeping on a bed with a pillow.

    PS: this is erin

  14. Lindsay: Touche on the inferior ape commment, i didnt really even think of it that way.i dont know how it isnt a natural instinct for us, probably because we dont have any enemies out for us at night so we dont constantly have to keep a look out haha

Autumn: Shea! i love me some fluffy pillows too! i thought i was going to pretty much be screwed through out life because of my fluffy pillow habit where as erin will probably live forever with her worthless pillows :)

Aditi: Yea! thats what i thought! everyone is making these supposidly awesome pillows for us when in reality the apes are watching us and laughing at our spine killing osteoarthritis causing pillows!!

  15. i think that some of us like me.. wouldnt be able to sleep without a pillow because they are so confy!! I dont have a lot of aches or pains when i wake up, so i dont really see it as a prob.

If they know that pillows are bad for us.. why they keep making them bigger and fluffier?

Cora: I agree how we are supposed to be the smart ones, and we are the ones hurting our backs.

Lauren: they do have the shows with the pillows, but now more is that stupid bed more than anything.

Mari: i also thought it was cool how the monkeys did that to protect themsleves, but i dont think we need to worry about things attacking us in the night.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I thought it was weird how were the one sleeping wrong and the monkeys, and animal are sleeping healthier.

Whats the best way for us to sleep?

    ReplyDelete
  17. I also found it interesting how the monkey's are sleeping healthier than us.

If how we're sleeping is injuring our body, why don't we ache when we wake up? I know when I don't have a pillow while sleeping I get really bad neck cramps.

  18. I was interested in the way that as some 'primative cultures become 'civilized' back problems begin to appear amoung the people. This occurs not only where there are Apes to observe, but cultures as varied as Africa, and Japan. To me this suggests that such a slepping position is not something we've learned from ou fellow apes, but something we've forgotten.
Evolutionarily we seem to have developed in such a way that our bodies could repai and realign on a hard surface- we must remember that it is really only in the last few hundred years that things like pillows, couches, and beds have become widely available. It seems these modern comforts are not so good for us as we have previously assumed.

I wonder which other technologies have made our lives better, and which have made them worse?

  19. i thought this was a good article. it makes us think of things we usaully wouldnt think about. i usualy wake up wit neck cramps but i also think i couldnt sleep with a pillow at nigh.
how much damage are we actually doing to our body by sleeping with a pillow?
which way is the best way for us to sleep?
is moving in ur sleep good for u since ur not sleepin stiff?

  21. I thought it was interesting how bad pillows can actually be. I always thought it was weird that I'm more comfortable sleeping with pillows around my head than actually under it. I agree that we should try to learn as much as we can from primal creatures and indiginous people becuase they are not going to be around forever.

How does the way I sleep impact my body?
Would always sleeping without a pillow help ease my back pain?

    ReplyDelete
  22. Indigo:that's a great question. How many of the things that we have invented are unecessary or even harmful to us? I never thought of it that way, but I will definatly be more leery of that now.

LilSis92010:I thought about how sometimes it seems more painful if we don't use pillows too. Why is it that we all fight for the couch and try to stay away from the floor? It's because the floor makes everyone sore and grouchy. Are we actually in pain or have we gotten it in our heads that that is the sensation that we SHOULD be having.

Cora: I move a lot in my sleep too. I found that when I move more I'm generally more sore than when I don't. Therefore, I think that definatly has something to do with it.

  23. What i found interesting was that pillows are actually not good for you, this really bums me out, looks like im sleeping without a pillow tonight.

1.)i wanna know what is the best way to sleep then?

    ReplyDelete
  24. One of the first things I found interesting was the fact that (yet again), civilization deviates from the 'best' way of doing things. The pillows I've seen (some homeopathic) all 'guaranteed' to cure back pain, and I guess none work. Looks like something else to research.

I have one question. Where is the research proving the inability of memory foam/back pillows? None of the readily available sources I can find show (m)any citations in their claims, making it very hard to dissect their claims.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I wonder if there is some actual advantage to pillows that we have been ignoreing. It seems like there must be something that would make pillows still seem like a good idea after all this- I mean we aren't exactly seeing health professionals come out against the pillow.

  26. I found it interesting that after all the advances in medicine, sleeping, and slepp profiling that we are actually not doing any good with all of these hi-tech beds or masks or pills. it is interesting that the most effective way to relieve jont pain and even avert it is to sleep more like our so-called "primative" relatives.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I thought it was a bit weird when they say that its not good to sleep with pillows. I love pillows and i probably couldnt sleep without them! i agree with Mari on the pillow thing.

    questions:

    1. Dont they say that its a good thing to sleep with pillows betweenn your legs for more back support?

2.If its not good for us to use pillows then why do so many people use them in today's society!

    p.s its bree

    ReplyDelete
  28. i have another question... would it help for us to sleep on the floor because apes/monkeys dont sleep on beds??

    ReplyDelete
  29. Indigo: that is a good point. couldnt sleeping with pillows be a good thing.

Alyssa: ya i agree if i sleep without a pillow i get horrible neck cramps.

Abbey: that is interesting. i had never thought about that before.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I thought it was interesting because the doctor usally tells us to sleep on our backs and not on our sides.

    1. Would it help us if we slept on our sides?
    2. How would this help us?

    ReplyDelete
  31. Like everyone else on this wonderful blog we have going, I found it interesting that as civilized humans we are the ones being shown up by those wild apes. I take my pillow with me everywhere and I am not ready by all means to part with it. Also, sleeping on the floor is not comfortable at all so that is wierd to think it is supposedly good for us.

    1. Does it matter the side your sleeping on to whether no pillow will help your back?
    2. Does being male or female make the difference?

Lauren: That is a good thought on how the special beds are supposed to help. I wonder if all we had to do was not use a pillow so that the beds were not necessary?

Autumn: I agree! I love my pillows :) Don't tell me now that I shouldn't be using them cause otherwise I am not going to be able to sleep.

Abbey: I had the same question about the male and females sleeping in different positions. We all have at least a little to protect you know :)
